TEXT A

Dear Ashley,
Today is our second day in Yekaterinburg. I am feeling very tired and my legs are shaking but I still want to continue our journey because I like travelling so much. Russia is a fantastic country and I have a lot to learn. Everything is so different, and I am trying to understand the new way of life here. I am learning a little bit of the language to make talking to people easier; but
I don’t learn foreign languages quickly. Although I don’t understand much yet I think that I can speak Russian a bit better. I am travelling with Nikki at the moment. She is a student from Leeds
University in England. She is a really nice girl but she always walks ahead of me and says that I am too slow. I am doing my best to keep up with her, but she is stronger than I am. Right now, Nikki is sitting with the owner of the small hotel we are staying at. They are discussing the differences between life in England and life in Russia. I don’t know the real name of the owner, but everybody calls him Fyodor. He speaks English very well and he is trying to teach Nikki some words in Russian. Every time Fyodor says a new word, Nikki tries to repeat it. Unfortunately, Nikki also seems to have difficulty with foreign languages. I just hope we don’t get lost and have to ask for directions.
Lots of love,
Michelle

The Visa Section British Embassy 35 Rue Du Faubourg St Honore 75383 Paris Cedex 08 France 10 May 2001Dear Sir/MadamAt the suggestion of a member of staff in your office, I am writing to ask for your help to enable one of our students from Russia to visit France briefly during his 5 months stay with us.Yuri Samoylenko would like to travel to Paris on 7 July 2001 from London by train and return by the same route on 10 July 2001. As you will see from the photocopied pages of his passport which I am enclosing – he has a single entry visa to this country. He cannot afford the time to apply to you for another entry visa and then wait for ten days while his application is processed. He would also be, I am told in a difficult situation since he would be applying in a country as a non-resident.We would very much like him to have the opportunity to visit Paris whilst he is here – it is a city which he has always longed to see. Would it be possible for him to apply for a visa to return here in advance so that he could call and collect it at your office on 8th or 9th July.Yours faithfully,
